Traditional Chinese Chow Mein with Chicken, Sauce & Veggies
Chow Mein is a popular Chinese stir-fried noodle dish loaded with vegetables, tender meat, and delicious sauces. This versatile and flavorful dish can be customized with your favorite protein and vegetables, making it a perfect option for a quick and satisfying meal.
Ingredients
For the Noodles:
- 8 ounces chow mein noodles
- 2 tbls vegetable oil
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 thumb ginger, grated
For the Sauce:
- 3 tbls soy sauce
- 2 tbls oyster sauce
- 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon sesame oil
- 1 tablespoon maize starch
- 1⁄4 Cup water
For the Stir-Fry:
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1 onion, thinly sliced
- 2 cups mixed vegetables (carrots, bell peppers cabbage bean sprouts sliced mushrooms
- 1 Cup cooked chicken, beef or shrimp (optional)
- salt and pepper to taste

Directions
Cook chow mein noodles according to the package instructions. Drain and set aside.
In a small bowl, whisk together the soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, cornstarch, and water until well combined. Set aside.
In a large wok or skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium-high heat. Add the minced garlic and grated ginger, saute for 1 minute until fragrant.
Add the sliced onions, mixed vegetables, and mushrooms to the wok. Stir-fry for about 3-4 minutes until the vegetables become tender-crisp.
If using meat, add the cooked chicken, beef, or shrimp to wok and stir-fry for an additional 2 minutes.
Pour the prepared sauce over the stir-fry and toss to coat everything evenly. Cook for 1-2 minutes until sauce is thick.
Add the cooked chow mein noodles to the wok and toss everything together until the noodles are well coated and heated through. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Transfer Chow Mein to serving plates or bowls. Serve and enjoy!
