Traditional South African Classic Milk Tart
Milk tart is a traditional South African dessert consisting of a sweet pastry crust, filled with a creamy milk mixture, cinnamon, and sugar. This dessert is a popular staple in South African culture, usually enjoyed during special occasions, and is renowned for its delicious taste and texture.
Ingredients
For the Crust:
- 2 cups of flour
- 1 egg
- 1⁄2 Cup of sugar
- 2 teaspoons of baking powder
- 1⁄2 Cup of unsalted butter, softened
For the Filling:
- 4 cups of milk
- 1 Cup of sugar
- 2 tbls of butter
- 2 tbls of flour
- 2 tbls of cornflour
- 4 eggs
- 1 teaspoon of Vanilla Extract

Preheat your oven to 180 degrees C (350 degrees F).
In a medium-sized bowl, mix together the crust ingredients until they form a soft dough. Press this dough into the bottom and up the sides of a 9-inch pie plate.
In a large saucepan, combine the milk, sugar, and butter. Cook these ingredients over medium heat until the sugar has dissolved and the mixture is hot.
In a separate bowl, whisk the flour and cornflour into the eggs until smooth. Gradually whisk in a cup of the hot milk, and then pour this mixture back into the saucepan, whisking constantly.
Cook the tart filling over medium heat until it thickens and boils, then remove it from the heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
Pour the filling into the crust, and then sprinkle the top with cinnamon.
Bake the tart in your preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until the crust is golden and the filling is set.
Allow the tart to cool before serving it.
